my zoo home

LH (my sister) wake up and found one mama cat and three new born baby kittens under her bed!!!

this young lady is well known for her cat phobia. the first thing she would do when we're having meals in mamak or open air food court, is to look around and observe a best place where cats won't come and disturb her. sometimes when she's unlucky, hehe, you hear her screaming like hell: aaaarrghh~~~ when cat goes under her stool. you'll also hear her extra sharp screaming when the cat's tail gently caress her leg.

back to my story. it was my brother who saw this mama cat in her room and then wake her up to see the unusual scene. according to our MSN conversation, LH didn't even look at those cats, she immediately ran downstairs and ask help from dad to get rid of them. mom suggested to call SPCA people. and they called.

15 mins later. a SPCA officer came in uniform. this guy caged all 4 cats and took them away. they paid RM50 for that special service. i wonder why they have to pay. LH said because it's sunday. what a wonderful day for her~ she said have to go buy TOTO, it's toooo unusual for her.

and also heard from her that racooons have been eating our ripe mangoes. the raccooons used to visit me in my room early in the morning, tickling my chime on top of my window pale.

so it's always true when i tell you that my house is very near to zoo.

book & food

book review submitted after 48 hours of struggling. Modernization As Ideology by Michael E. Latham was the book i read. the idea of modernization had been used as a weapon to stop the spreading of communism during cold war. american who always thought themselves as the superior & destined ones, are supposed to save the world took the responsibility of helping less developed countries to eradicate poverty & fight for democracy. this modernization approach seemed to provide more support in terms of financial &  technology to others. but it was actually a bait, a smoke screen, the real purpose was to make possible for US's intervention in latin america. the book is worth reading. it's good to know how politicians apply the ideology in policy shaping, and how they manipulate people to believe in "modernization".

cooked spaghetti for dinner. ingredients: spaghetti, hunt's chunky vegie spaghetti sauce, garlic, onion, celery, green pepper, & luncheon meat. would have added some cheese if i've got some in my fridge, too bad. anyway it's still tasty, finish one big whole pot with the other 5, and the last few bits of gravy, i licked 'em from my plate, hehe~~

gaining confidence

finally, i did my first presentation on the lecture of international politics. it was more like a debate. the topic was: should non-sovereign entities be accepted to participate in WHO's activities? my partner was a guy from school of government. we were given 3 weeks to prepare. but both of us never had chance to meet up for discussion. at first, he was almost "uncontactable". called his room, no one answered. emailed him, no reply. and he hasn't got a cellphone. and at last, when we fixed a time to meet, he didn't showed up because of overslept (it's 4pm and he's still sleeping!)

anyway, this morning, 2 hours before the presentation, we had brief discussion. during the presentation, he did most of the talking, i was supposed to attack my opponents. before this, i've never spoken in front of the class, not brave & confident enough to do so, cause all my classmates are "best & brightest", don't think i would be able to express myself as good as them. but surprisingly, this time, my brain & tongue are functioning! hehehe... with my malaysian accent, i could speak as i thought, accurately!

received compliments from my classmates after the presentation, said that i did better than that guy. hohoho... they assured that i performed well though i kept saying there are points that i left out. their encouragement meant so much to me.

rite, gtg for the psychology lecture. gee... it's busy tuesday again.

first snow

beijing officially gets into winter with its first snow today. walking out from the lecture hall after my last lecture at 6:30pm, saw snowflakes flying in the air... geez! snow!!!

i wasn't as excited as last year, when i first saw snow. walked back to dorm just as usual. juniors came and ask me to go out and take pics for them. snow was heavy. within an hour, i could see approx. 6cm of snow covering the lawn! later at night, dry twigs and branches of trees were broken, i heard from my room the crackle noises. the thickness of snow weighed too much for them i guess.

establishment of UMSIB's website

Received an sms from goofy while going for dinner with Yumi last nite, saying that our very own website has finally established! Can't wait to login to explore the forum, i rushed back quickly after dinner at Thinker's Cafe.

The concept of mamak stall is nice, the interface is specially user friendly. spent whole night exploring the entire site, messages flooded the forum within 2 days. we've now got 38 members and 285 posts, done within 24 hours!!!

Wanted to take up the task of forum leader for music zone, but i regret after making such decision. gonna be real busy in Nov, won't have much time for taking care of the forum. :(

place called U-N-I-V-E-R-S-I-T-Y

spent whole morning gathering information related to non sovereign state's entry to WHO. guess i have to see prof. wang before my presentation, it's gonna be my first chance to speak in front of my IR classmates.

the lecture of introduction to psychology starts at 7:10pm, i reached the lecture hall at 6:20pm, with a chicken burger as dinner. as expected, the crowd has already blocked the entrance of the hall. this is one of the hot subject that attracts people from inside and outside of the campus to sit in. little tags were sticked on desk of most seats from the first to third row, reads: (name), reserved for lecture 11-12. some books or pencil cases were used to reserve seats. grrrrr...... i had no choice, but to pick on an aisle at the 2nd last row. this is not the first time i come across with this. some students even did their "reservation" a day before the lecture by sticking those tags on the seats.

i definitely oppose unhealthy habit as such. but it'd certainly be a good topic for my next campus news. plan to do an in-depth report on this. gonna calculate how many seats were pre-occupied in a lecture hall, especially during those hot-pick subjects.  i don't have to be blunt in my words, don't have to blame and accuse anyone for that, guess the stats alone will be enough to shock the campus.

actually everyone knows about this and they are practicing the same habit although they themselves condemn that. i hate to accept the fact that seats are limited, not because the hall is small, but because of those selfish ones. some people must have been very frustrated like me, they were aware abt it, and thought of changing. unfortunately, there're too little of them, and they didn't voice up. in the end, nothing has been done, they still behave in the old way, putting tags here and there...

no comment on this place called U-N-I-V-E-R-S-I-T-Y.

memorandum sent

received this emergency task, read from sinchew that the deputy minister of education is coming to beijing, leading a delegation of reps from private colleges of m'sia to join the international education fair. and then we decided to ask for a meeting between the minister and us, from the union of m'sian students in beijing (MSIB). wonderful. he agreed to meet. so we went to the embassy. five of us chatted with the reps from some colleges, witnessed the signing ceremony of MOU between chinese government & m'sian colleges, and then had a feast of m'sian cuisine for lunch.

we had a 30 minites meeting with the minister. a memorandum was presented, mainly to request for recognition of qualifications, sponsorhip/scholarship and sending an education consellor to m'sian embassy in china. one good thing is that he jot down the figures in his notebook (a conventional memo pad) when we told him how expensive the tuition fees are. hopefully things will get better and we will get what we want after this face-to-face conversation.

don't understand why these politician never take the initiative to meet overseas students, yet we have to call and ask if they are interested to see us. last semester, during the SARS outbreak, my singaporean friends received n95 masks from their ministry of education, and he's kind enough to give those extra masks to us, malaysian. you see, from here, we felt badly neglected. we felt that we were not appreciated by our country, at least not as much as our friends. their country reach them directly and personally to ensure their safety when their lives are at stake. now i could understand the reason of my friend who no longer feel belonging to malaysia. sad.

have a look at the news article regarding MSIB sending memorandum to deputy minister of education on sinchew and nanyang (only in chinese, sorry).

launching of ShenZhou 5 spaceship

China is going to launch their first ever manned spaceship--ShenZhou 5 tomorrow morning, after 4 successful attempts of sending unmanned spaceships since 1999. the entire project is classified as state secret. not much official news were released. according to Xinhua News Agency (china's official news agency), "China plans to launch the manned Shenzhou-5 spaceship sometime between Oct. 15 and 17," and some reliable sources told media that the "right time" will be 8am, 15th Oct.

this time, public were not informed about the details of the project, not only the date of launching, even the number of astronaut(s) and whom to be sent out is still unknown till now. CCTV (China Central Television) decided to cancel the live broadcast of the launching, reason not known. chinese people were excited discussing about it, although the chinese government seemed trying hard to handle the plan with very low profile basis.

being the third country to send manned spaceship, China is proving their ability in aerospace industry. i'm sure other countries like US, Japan & Russia will start monitoring China's aerospace & military technology closely, they can feel the threat of a rising power.

and heard that we'll have our very own Malaysian astronaut, hmm... is that necessary?

*   *    *
Mdm. Xu, my journalism lecturer specially reminded all of us to watch the live broadcast tomorrow morning but i would have to attend the Intro to Communication's lecture at 8am. anyway, i'll be more willing to stay and witness the historical moment of the launching of ShenZhou 5!

then raise this question in my mind, will this be another achievement of mankind or just another threat to world peace?
